There once was a girl who lived by the shore
Whose Mommy told her that they were quite poor.
See Mommy was afraid of ever being in need,
So she bought many things and justified greed.
As time went by, the little girl grew,
Increasing in beauty and all that she knew.
She loved her Mommy but felt angry inside,
Because Mommy used people and oftentimes lied.
It was bad when Mommy exchanged truth for wealth,
But it was sad when Mommy lied to herself.
She told lies so good she believed her own.
Until they were all she had left in her lonely home.
The little girl swore she’d never know this life,
So she found a boy and became a wife.
She made friends and a family in a lovely town,
And had her own little girl whom she’d never put down.
Then one day this Mommy had a very bad day,
When she was betrayed in a terrible way,
Angry and scared, she let loose that old goal,
And resorted to lies for the sake of control.
When that hammer came down, oh how she’d won,
When maybe all she’d shown was how far she could run.
Conflict and pain were rarely dealt with head-on,
First as a girl and now as a mom.
Now truly, truly, Daddy’s got his own lies,
He forgets how little the world satisfies.
How he dreams of the day when all is made right,
On that day when we’ll kneel before unapproachable light.
‘Til then, another little girl grows down by the shore,
Apart from a Daddy who could not love her more,
A Daddy who’ll someday hug and hold her tight,
Who’ll tell her she’s loved and that it’ll all be alright.
Your mother and I loved each other, and we loved having you.
I’m sorry it didn’t go the way I wanted it to.
So please, be good, and do what is right.
I’m praying for you and your family every night.
